The Soopa Show…

Posted in Customs, Shows/Events by saki on Apr 20th, 2008, Comments (0)

… Maybe I should’ve written a sticky that said I’d be at NYCC all weekend! Yesterday was exciting, I have plenty of things to post about… but it’ll all have to wait until tomorrow because I’m just going to wrap things up for y’all with a “pretty little bow”. In the meantime, I went to Erick Scarecrow’s Soopa Coin Up Show. First thing that must be mentioned, getting there really was “soopa easy” as Erick stated on the flyer.

Once I got there, I have to admit that I was highly impressed with the space. It was nothing like I had imagined… then again, whenever I’m outside of my safe zone, nothing is really what it seems. The space was big and well lit. I’m not a fan of florescent lights beaming over my head, but I love florescent lights both behind or under vinyls because it just makes for better photos. That’s just my opinion.

The customs were overall amazing. I had fond memories of kANO’s Money Grip show- not in the art or artists themselves, but seeing what other artists do with ONE specific figure. The munny/dunny is so “mainstream” that it doesn’t have the same effect on me that these shapes have. Hit the jump for some of my favorites and visit the flickr to see all of the customs.

Mad about Mad*L’s

Posted in Customs, Shows/Events by saki on Apr 18th, 2008, Comments (0)

Last night was Mad’s Phase 3 realease. What’s that mean? I am referring to the second coming of his Mad*l’s. I have to say that since I got into the scene I was longing for this day. I wasn’t around during the first wave of Mad*L’s and now that he’s producing them himself, I am overjoyed with the upcoming releases. In order to kick off the Mad*L wave, Mad has a custom 10″ Mad*Ls show at MPH last night. Check out more photos after the jump.

Comic Book Kubrick Cars

While on the search for tokidoki bags, one in particular, I stopped by Yoyamart and ended up seeing these Kubrick Mobiles. They have 5 different designs, but I especially love the Batman and Superman designs. Unfortunately, each design costs $24.95, if you want one for yourself click the link at the bottom.

Brooklyn Museum: Takashi Murakami

Posted in Shows/Events by saki on Apr 6th, 2008, Comments (0)

My Mr. and I made our way to The Brooklyn Museum to check out Murakami’s exhibit today. AMAZING, stunning, marvelous, truly magnificent are some of the words that come to mind. Oh, and once or twice I thought perverted. The space they provided him with was overwhelming. He really was the reason to be there today.

Earlier this week, I tried to get passes for the gala evening. One, I wanted to try my luck with a sketch, and I also knew Kanye would be performing and he happens to be one of my favorite performers. I was contacted with a sad, but regretful no– and I was heartbroken, especially when I got to see the pictures. Unfortunately, the images above were the only ones I was able to take. No photos were allowed. =(

Once we made our way through the show, we ended up in the shop and I couldn’t help but purchase a butt-load of stuff. If you want to purchase some stuff yourself, they have some items listed online [click here]. I spent a good chunk of my paycheck today… check the following post for a chance to win some stuff yourself.

Seen: Mist at KidRobot

Posted in Shows/Events by saki on Apr 3rd, 2008, Comments (0)

I went to see Mist at Kid Robot today. Unfortunately, it was the first time that I actually didn’t stick around for a signing or bothered to meet the artist. Whenever I go to these signings, I tend to bring my sketchbook to steal the souls of the very talented artists that create the figures we all love and adore. I don’t think I’ve ever shown up to an event with the artist’s figure and asked for him/her to sign it. I love my vinyls too much to get them defaced with ink. That’s just me though.

When I arrived to Mist’s signing, the first thing I was told was “no sketchbooks.” One of the guys said he walked in, asked for a sketch and was told to buy the figure. Mist would not be sketching in books only on figures. This decision truly angered me. I know the plot is to both sell as many figures as possible and keep to the time constraints, but I’m a fan who doesn’t like to get her vinyls drawn on. Since I want a tag on a book instead of a vinyl, that means I’m not entitled to one? I didn’t think it was fair. I was angry, so I asked to just take some quick shots and bounced.

Sad times for me.

Toy Baroness Dunny and Party

[image taken from Kidrobot’s flickr page]

I have a huge list of updates that I haven’t been able to cut down for what seems like weeks. I have a midterm, tests and papers/stories due, so please pardon the lack of posts these days. I’m not sure if you’ve heard about Toy Baronesses GID Dunny? It is going to be released April 18th, during her birthday party at the Knitting Factory. I’d been holding off on this post because I didn’t know the location of the party, but alas, the news has arrived. Is anyone planning on going? Click on the flyer for more info.

Munny: Gaara!

Posted in Customs by saki on Mar 30th, 2008, Comments (0)

Vinyl Requiem posted this Gaara custom munny last week and I forgot to share him. He is the awesomeness! Check the packaging after the jump. The artist, Adrian Tam, is responsible for a couple of the works that have made their way onto various sites, including; Ryu, Akuma and Sam Fisher customs. According to his interview with Vinyl Requiem, you can contact him about comissions. I have to say that his customs are great, but the packaging just adds an extra something to the piece.

Piece: Gaara from Naruto, the items I used was just clay for its sash, and ninja band. The gourd was made of another munnys head, the bomb, and a spray can and then it was just all clayed up. Then I just made a custom box.

Shows: Techno Babble at MPH

Posted in Shows/Events, I Heart Toys by saki on Mar 30th, 2008, Comments (0)

As I had previously updated, Friday was Nakanari and Dave “Outta My Mind” Quiles’ Techno Babble show at MPH. Though I didn’t arrive early, since I had to go to a meeting, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to a steady flow of visitors coming in and out of the shop.

Munny: Audrey II

Posted in Customs, I Heart Toys by saki on Mar 27th, 2008, Comments (0)

The Kid Robot’s mini munny competition ended long ago, but I can’t help and be dazzled by the designs. I wanted to post Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors) way back when the competition was taking place, but I kept running into so many designs it was hard to pick the order. But here it is. Feed me!! Anyone up for giving up some blood? ???:

Unfortunately, there’s no additional information about the artist.

Futurama Lego

Posted in Movies/TV, I Heart Toys by saki on Mar 25th, 2008, Comments (0)

This post is truly in honor of my Mr. and his love for Futurama. The show does totally rule, and it is because of that show that I wish I was a mathmetician just so I could get ALL of their math jokes. I am jealous of you mathmeticians, lucky! Anyways, it seems a few sites have posted about Futurama’s new look, they’ve been legolized. Oh snaps! I just created a verb. Check the rest of the post for more pics.

I must admit that the level of concentration and time that goes into a project like this is unimaginable to me. The most I ever did with lego was build my dream home, this was a VERY long time ago. I never thought about bringing scenery from my favorite shows to life. Maybe, I should consider it.

Finally, what would the world of Futurama be without a drunken Bender? Dull. I love it. I send big props to the artist.

TokyoPlastic Teaser

Posted in I Heart Toys by saki on Mar 23rd, 2008, Comments (0)

I’m sure by now, most people have seen the teaser that MPH posted on both their flickr and their forum. The second I saw that red dot, I knew it was something involving TokyoPlastic. Don’t know who or what they are? I’ve posted their flash video here: I ♥ Flash

I love their stuff. For a very long time I searched like madness for one of their 4″ Geishas, and thanks to my Mr., I own the small white one and the two large ones they later distributed. When I spotted the sneak peak, I was estatic. Two weeks ago, I was able to snag a sneak peak at a very small part of the upcoming release. This has just added to the excitement. I can’t release what my eyes have seen, but I did want to say this: their stuff is awesome, they’re a talented group of people and they have yet to fail me with any of their releases. Therefore, I think you should know that their upcoming piece, which I only know will be released in 2008, will definitely be worth it. Woo hoo!

Pillow Fight Day!

Posted in Shows/Events by saki on Mar 23rd, 2008, Comments (0)

[The Pillow Fight Countdown]

Hi-hi! Yesterday around noon I got a text message from my friend to go with her to Union Sq. to join in on the Pillow Fight. I’ve always wanted to go, and somehow was never aware that there was actually a website that informed people of the date and time. I’m not sure what I was thinking. Nevertheless, every year, I missed the damn pllow fight and somehow would meet up with friends who had participated in it. This year, however, it was different- I went!

I arrived to the area early, to discover that the event was much bigger than I had anticipated. OMG! Union Square is typically a very busy place, but this was massive. I met up with my friends with camera at hand, and posted myself at the “lifeguard” post. There I was, worried that at 3pm, a pillow was going to smash my lens. I was safe though, some guys decided they would protect me, which I appreciated.

Though I myself did not participate with a pillow, photographing the event was so much fun. I wanted to capture the feathers flying up, pillows hitting backs, and hair filled with various pillow stuffing. It was rather thrilling. Check out more images after the jump.

The pillow fight.

This kid was too cute.

The feathers!!

Tiger Dunny

Joe Ledbetter\'s 8\

Question. People know that I try my best to go to ALL the signings and shows in the city, correct? So I wonder, did anyone know about the Tiger Dunny signing that took place yesterday at the ‘Pirate Store?’ Umm, I ask because I didn’t. Not only did I not know, for whatever reason, but no one told me. No one dropped me a line and said, “hey saki, are you going to the signing?” I’m slightly hurt, though I wouldn’t have bought the dunny, this is one less chance of getting Joe Ledbetter’s sketch in my book.  How sad am I.

Munny: Jack Skellington

Jack Skellington Munny

*screams* I’ve been in love with Nightmare Before Christmas longer than I can actually remember. Every Christmas I have a tradition of watching both NBC and The Grinch (since it’s release), because they both remind me of a time that wasn’t so complicated. This munny totally rocks for the simple fact that it’s Jack the pumpkin King! Check out ~fat-sheep2002 on DeviantArt for more.

Charlie Brown Munny

I swear, communities like Flickr and DeviantArt so rule. You find the most amazing work, and the inspiration you get from looking at the stuff is overwhelming. I’m a huge fan of Peanuts, the comic strip not the nuts. The whole gang are my favorite characters, which rarely happens in my life– me actually falling in love with all the characters instead of one or two. Anyway, DeviantArt user *duss005 uploaded this image last week of this Charlie Brown custom munny, I just had to share.
